Range Safety Officer & Instructor

Ray served over 28 years in law enforcement with three different agencies in Los Angeles County. He began his tenure with his last agency, the Santa Monica College Police Department, as a Sergeant in 2009 and retired at the rank of Captain in June of 2018.

While working as a full-time police officer, Ray earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s of Science Degree in Emergency Services Administration from California State University, Long Beach.

Due to his involvement in the June 7th, 2013, Active Shooter incident in Santa Monica, CA, Captain Bottenfield was awarded the United States Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor and the California Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor.

When he is not at work, Ray enjoys spending time with his wife Linda, fishing, shooting, hiking with his dog, and cooking. He is also active in local politics and serves as an Associate Election Judge in McLennan County.

Having been born in Illinois and, after living in Oregon and California, Ray is proud to be a citizen of the Republic of Texas.
